Creativity Blooms, Visit my Sewing Room

Creativity Blooms Here

I’ve been sewing up a storm the last few weeks,  and my creativity blooms while preparing some new garments to promote new pattern releases by Jalie.

I can’t show them to you yet, but I thought I’d share my sewing space with you.  I love seeing where other creative people bloom, and seeing as my space just got tidied up to welcome a new sewing machine cabinet, it seemed like a good time to share.  (Before I mess it up too much).

east facing window where creativity blooms

My window faces east, so the light is great.  My orchids love the diffused light and reward me with colourful blooms.  The one at the bottom has a new bud spike.  They live on a tension pole designed for a bath room.  Each little shelf is just the right size for a pot.  Creativity blooms in many forms.

There’s no wasted space, a doll given to me by a friend sits in her little basket and keep my late mother Christmas cactus and Hoya company, along with a machine knitted sock sample waiting to have it’s instructions written up.

There’s just enough room to have the cutting table away from the wall and still leave space to sit and sew without having to move it out of the way.

Here’s where the work gets done, I sew on a Husqvarna/Viking Epic, cover-stitch on a Janome, and serge on a Husqvarna/Viking 200s.  My Epic doesn’t travel, and I have an Opal 690Q  to sew on at Quilts of Valour or sewing with the Trent Valley Quilters’ Guild.

These make me so happy.  On the left are my mother’s diplomas that my youngest sister had framed for me, the next two are fashion prints in vintage frames, and on the right is an acrylic painting of Caribbean fish.  A few of my own watercolours are there, too. Another way my creativity blooms.

supplies, so creativity blooms

Looking toward the door are some “over the door” shoe storage pockets filled with often-used notions, my sewing thread, ironing board, and some more memorabilia that helps my creativity bloom.  My Aunt’s framed watercolours are hanging over the closet doors.

These wooden shoes were my size the summer they were given to me, and the vintage cross stitch was done by a relative.

creativity blooms everywhere

If you haven’t already figured it out, I’m not bothered by “clutter” and “stuff”.  In fact, they inspire my creativity.  There is an 8 foot by 4 foot piece of fabric-covered styrofoam under all this  blooming creativity.

I hope you enjoyed this little tour, now I’ll get back to sewing up the new Jalie patterns.

They’ll be released soon, so watch this space for details and lots of photos.

  1. What a lovely room thank you for sharing this with us. That has given me inspiration to go and sort out my mess of a room with the knitting machine and sewing machine and all the clutter that goes with it!!

  2. Wow! So organized, bright and cheerful.
A wonderful, warm work place with natural light!😊

  3. Beautiful room! Thank you for sharing! Such an inspiration for me. Mine, at present, looks like “Hoarder’s Nightmare!”
Obviously time to make a change. What is the size of your room?
Looking to finding and planning another room for my talents to shine. I have a couple of those vintage fashion prints that were my grandmother’s that I would love to hang and a few pieces of tatted lace from my great aunt.
I need to make room for my Bernina 770QE and my Janome serger. Any ideas would help.

    • Hi Judy, my room is 13 feet by 10 feet. I AM a hoarder, so I didn’t show you the interior of the closet, filled with tubs of fabric 🙂 I use a lot of clear plastic “shoe-box” sized tubs for fabric scraps, and have them sorted by colour, and the small ones by size. My threads are on the wall, and clear plastic shoe storage pockets that hang from the door help, too. And just sew you know, I would never have shared pics of that room 2 weeks ago. I would have been embarrassed. 🙂

  4. thank you for the tour around your sewing room…. you give me such inspiration .. would love to have a cutting board your size…. and never mind the clutter… it’s a beautiful space called your own!
