Supply list for Bowl Cozy

All supplies MUST be 100% cotton!   NO SCRIM!!!!!!

2 pieces outer fabric, 10″ square

2 pieces batting, 9 inches square

cotton sewing thread

How to Sew the Bowl Cozy

Center a piece of batting on the wrong side of each piece of
cotton.  With a slightly long stitch sew each pair diagonally from
corner to corner.

Now we’re making 4 darts in each piece. Fold 1 piece in half as shown and mark 2 1/2″ down from the edge of the fabric and 3/4″ in from the edge.

Make 4 darts on each piece. Trim seam allowances to 1/4″.

Place both pieces together with good sides facing.

Using 1/4″ seam allowance, sew both layers together,
leaving a 3-inch opening centered across a dart for turning.

Reinforce the beginning and end of the seam.  Clip the corners and turn to the right side.

Top stitch all around about 1/8″ from the edge which closes
the opening.

  1. Just wanted to say “thank you for this free pattern” I have a friend with MS and she holds her bowl in her hands so she can eat without assistance. Sometimes the bowls too hot to handle so she has to wait for it to cool. This is a perfect idea for her.

  2. Thank you for the FREE pattern I was looking for. Seems like I always have to spend money to get a pattern, and I appreciate a free one once in a while. Thank you again!

  3. This is a wonderful idea & wonderfully clear & easy to follow pattern. I sewed sets of four for several friends this past Christmas. Everyone loved them!

  4. Dear Yvette:
Thank you so very much for this pattern. I saw a friend of mine who had these and I fell in love with them, but didn’t know how to go about making them. This pattern is fabulous — such easy instructions to read.

  5. I see that you have to use cotton on all supplies. I have Coats Cotton, 100% Mercerized Cotton thread. Not sure what the “mercerized” is. But it does say 100% Cotton. Will this work?
    Thank you!

  6. What type of batting do you use? I bought the wrap n zap type and I was told to wash and dry all material first because of shrinkage. Well when I washed the batting it fell apart. I am out $20

    • Hi Debbie, our local quilt shop carries a 100% batting with no scrim, but the wrap n zap would be fine too. It never dawned on me to prewash all the material first, the shrinkage would have been minimal, so it didn’t matter to me. I’m really sorry that it all fell apart, that takes the fun out of this project.

  7. I have what may be a silly question. Why does it have to be 100% cotton? May seem like a weird question. I assume it is because of the heat.
