Round 1; a cardigan inspired by living coral

I enjoyed the first challenge of the sewing bee! Sewing a cardigan inspired by living coral. If you’d like more information about the sewing bee, I wrote about it here.

The details are on the patternreview.com website, here.

Coral is one of those colours that make me happy. It conjures up images of coral in warm waters where I’ve snorkeled on vacations, a warm colour of lipstick, (my friend Cheryl) and water, the ripples on the Trent River as it flows through my town, and the shimmer of sunlight as it reflects off the water. Those thoughts are what inspired my project.

A pattern by Kwik Sew suited the fabric and the theme just the way I envisioned it, and having sewn it before, (in another patternreview.com contest) I knew the fit was right on. Here’s that post.

The well-aged piece of fabric was in my stash, and the texture reminds of the ripples on the river. I added a shimmer by using Sulky metallic thread in the upper looper of my serger along with a spool of wooly nylon to finish the hem with a lettuce-leafed rolled edge, then used the same thread in the needle of my sewing machine to create 3 columns of shimmering ripples along the front drapes.

Pockets are important for me, so I added one-piece slash pockets to my cardigan to make it a useful addition to my wardrobe.

My review of the pattern has been written and my contest entry submitted. That was the hard part, the sewing was a breeze. Well, what do you think?
