Adding Pockets when I Sew my Clothes

I’ve been adding pockets when I sew my clothes.

I sew most of my own clothes, using Jalie patterns. ALL of my “bottoms” have pockets, whether they’re part of the original pattern, or if I’ve had to adapt the pattern to include pockets. My car keys go in my left pocket, my money, a tissue and credit card go in my right pocket. I HATE carrying a purse.  Many of Jalie’s pattern do have pockets, which makes my sewing simpler, but some do not.

Recently a friend mentioned a podcast she heard on CBC radio about pockets in women’s clothing which she thought might interest me.  It did!  The fight for pocket equality goes back centuries, and the podcast goes into historic detail, which I found fascinating.

Here’s the link.

Adding Pockets to Eleonore

So in my sewing life, I added pockets to the Eleonore pull-on jeans before Jalie published their version. Here’s my post.

I’ve made many, many pairs of Eleonores now, and still add pockets to every pair.  I now use Jalie’s add-on for the pockets, altered of course because I raise the rise of the jeans.  Lately I’ve been adding an extra pocket on the outer thigh, with a zipper, for my cell phone.

More Pockets, this time to Renee

Jalie’s Renee,Ponte Pant is another pattern that I like to make, both in full length and in capri length.  I add a welt pocket to every one of these I sew, sometimes even two!

Adding Pockets to Rachel

I even added a “Secret Pocket” to Rachel, Jalie’s very flattering dress or top pattern. The post is here.

And Then there were Zippers in Pockets

Jalie’s Jessica leggings already had pockets, but I was asked to morph them into zippered pockets.  See that post here.

Sew, you can see, I do make a habit of adding pockets to garments where there were none.
