Jalie Leggings, Pockets with Zippers

Jalie Leggings, Pockets with Zippers

Leggings are (for many people) a wardrobe staple.  Pockets are (for many people) a necessity, and zippers (on pockets) give ( most people) a feeling of security.  In a recent on-line class that I taught for That Sewing Place, Newmarket, Jalie leggings were the main subject.  Some students were using Jalie’s Jessica #4127 pattern and others used Clara #3887.  Jessica has great side pockets, Clara has no pockets.

I showed my students 2 ways of adding zipper closures to the Jessica leggings, AND added a side pocket in a pair of Clara leggings. Here’s a pic of the Jessica’s, you can see the zippered pockets along the sides.

The Jessica legging pattern has strategic seams, making the pockets and zippers relatively easy to insert. I did it both ways on this pair of leggings, and although they are visibly different, I’ll bet nobody (except me) will even notice.

Pockets with Zippers, Method 1

On this method, which is the easiest, one edge of the zipper shows.

Pockets with Zippers, Method 2

With this method, the zipper is inserted between the layers.  It means you need to cut the back piece though.

Adding a Zippered Pocket Where There are no Side-Seams

This method involved making a “window” and sewing the zipper in behind it.

This was a GREAT class, and we all, (me included) learned a lot.  It you’d like the notes from this class, it’s available for purchase.  E-transfer $2 to yvettechilcott@yahoo.ca and I’ll send it to your email address.  It will come as a PDF with a full description of each method including pictures

I have many more classes planned to teach for That Sewing Place Newmarket, so be sure to check out their website.  Most are virtual, so you can attend them from anywhere via Zoom.

I love to teach, read about my beginnings here.
