Plant Hanger to Sew
A Plant Hanger, How to Sew One from Fabric
A friend gave me a plant last week and suggested I hang it outdoors for the summer, which led me to come up with this; a plant hanger to sew.
I made many of these in macrame during the ’70’s, but I wanted to sew a plant hanger this time.
Don’t you just love this sunflower print?
Here’s how I did it:
- Cut 8 strips of quilting cotton, 2 1/2 inches by wof (44 inches or so). Fold in half longways and using a 4 thread overlock stitch serge around all 4 sides. (Alternatively you could turn the raw edges in first, then fold, and zigzag around the outer edges.
- The serged edges have a “right” and “wrong” side. (in my opinion). Lay all the strips with the right side up and mark 6 inches (15 cm) from the end.
- Select a wide (5mm) short (2mm) zigzag. Place 2 strips with wrong sides together then zigzag along the edge through both layers for 1/2 an inch, reversing back and forth 3 times.
- Remove the strips from the machine and pull them flat at the seam.
- Repeat until all 8 strips are joined into a circle.
- Measure and make a mark 3 inches up from the previous mark on all the strips.
- Separate the strips into adjacent pairs and zigzag each pair together as before. (4 seams). (shown in blue)
- Measure and mark each strip 4 inches (10 cm) from the previous mark.
- Separate the strips and join one strip from one pair to one strip of the adjacent pair for 1/2 inch at the mark. (shown in green)
- At the other end (the top) layer all strips one on top of the other and zigzag through all layers to secure. Your plant hanger is finished.
Add a plant, and insert a hook at the top. Find a suitable spot to hang it, and admire your new plant hanger.
Would you make one? Are you going to make one? I’d love to hear some feedback from you.
