Fabric Marking Tools my Favorites

Fabric Marking Tools, These are my Favorites!

It’s all about accuracy, so here are the fabric marking tools that are my favorites.  And, it’s not a “one size fits all”.  It depends on the fabric, thick, thin, textured, or smooth.  It depends on the colour of your fabric, and what you want to mark on it.

If you just want to mark an “X” on the wrong side of each cut-out piece, any chunk of chalk will do as long as the colour shows up and it doesn’t show through to the right side.

However, if you need to mark the apex of a bust dart, you need something clear, fine and removable.

I’ve been practicing making videos, so I did one for you about some fabric marking tools.  Here it is:

What are YOUR favorite marking tools?  Have you worked with one that you hate?  Comments are most welcome.

  1. Yvette, enjoyed your video on different markers… I will look into the retractable fine pen as I had never heard of this one… Thank you for sharing!

  2. Nice video, I think I have them all. Love the Frixon and the retractable pencil, Have the taylor chalk in white and also have chalks that I sharpened like a pencil..Thanks Yvette

  3. I like the clover chalk pen, BUT I have found the yellow one tends to stain fabric, so you have to be really careful with it. I’ve heard great things about the Chalkaner (I think that’s the name!)

  4. I also like to use a Hera marker. It leaves no mark because it creases the fabric. For interior darts I use the old fashioned chalk paper and tracing wheel.

    • I forgot about the Hera marker, I guess I don’t use it often enough. I used to use the old fashioned tracing paper and wheel, then I couldn’t find it and could only find the chalky paper, which I dislike.
