Sewing for me, Over 60

Sewing for ME

Hey Sewist!  Are you passionate about sewing for yourself?  As for me, I find GREAT pleasure in sewing for me, and learning how to adjust the patterns for my slowly changing body shape.  I’ve been sewing my own clothes “forever”.  Mom was a very talented sewist and it rubbed off.  My 2 sisters and I were always well dressed in the latest styles.  Mom kept abreast of what was coming through fashion magazines that her mother sent from Holland.  Here’s what they looked like in the 1960’s.

Back in those days I could buy a pattern from the “big 4”, add a bit of length, cut it out, sew it up and wear it.  I was slender, not quite as slender as Twiggy, but close.

Now I’m in my 60’s and still love to sew.  But the “big 4” just don’t cut it for me anymore.  Ever since I took the Islander Sewing System course and then their teacher certification my sewing changed.  I learned about appropriate seam allowance and how to sew perfect seams, pockets, zippers and collars.  Now I sew using “Independent” pattern designers who “get it”.  Mostly Jalie, but Burda, Ottobre and some of my mom’s old magazines keep me inspired, sewing clothes that suit me.

I’m winding up 100 days of me “Wearing Jalie Daily” on Instagram.  Every single day I’ve been taking a photo of what I have on that day with a bit of an explanation.  SewWhatYvette (@sewwhatyvette) • Instagram photos and videos   Only a few days to go, and then what?

In the meantime, I’m working on samples for an upcoming class, Jalie’s Danaelle for a 4-week Zoom session with That Sewing Place”, Newmarket.  No alterations needed for this one, and I’m making the long version.  My main fabric is a soft black and white plaid knit and my accent colour is black, which I’m using for the hood, cuffs, bottom band and pocket inset.

I’ll post photos when I’m finished!

My Jalie Garment Sewing Retreat November 18/19 is FULL!  I’m so excited to be sharing some of my knowledge with other garment sewing enthusiasts!  I have another one planned for the Spring, here in Trenton.  If this is something you’re interested in, please reach out to me.

Sew, what are you sewing for yourself at the moment?  Do you have fitting issues?  I’d love to hear from you!
